Weeks 2 and 3: Veggies and Fruits!

Hi everyone, how are you guys doing? Are you able to keep up with your New Year, New You motto and resolutions? I’m sorry I haven’t had another blog post recently. Our entire household got sick with a horrible cold that poor Winter gave us and that lasted WAAAAAAY too long. Everyone is finally feeling better, but it was a very difficult couple of weeks and I have barely been able to get my homework done much less any blog posting. I’m sorry! I’m sure you have all missed us dearly! ;)

Anyway, back to our weekly resolutions for New Year, New Year. Since we missed week 2 I wanted to share with you the motto for it now. Week 2 is all about new vegetables and trying out new, exciting recipes for them. I, personally have discovered this year that I love different veggies like Beets, Asparagus, Brussel Sprouts, Sweet Potatoes and a few others. These were things I absolutely hated as a kid (what kid doesn’t though?), but now I love trying out new recipes for them and I can thank my older sister, Laura for that. A year and a half ago, my daughter, Winter and I visited Laura at her home in the mountains of Colorado (10,000 feet up and it was GORGEOUS!) and she told me that she had decided earlier that year that she was going to try all new foods, foods that she had absolutely hated as a kid and now that she was older, she decided that her taste buds had most likely changed and that she wasn’t going to rely on her childhood ideas about food anymore. I liked this idea instantly and she made me some delicious grilled Asparagus that night which had me deciding to follow in her foot steps and now, the rest is history. Since that day, I have tried many different veggies and found ones I love (like sweet potatoes) and others that I still am not the biggest fan of (like turnips). This whole week is about forgetting what you always knew about different vegetables and trying them out with something new and different. I like to try them with different flavorings like Chinese Five Spice, Zaatar spice, garlic and fresh herb, lemon and lime, or even some different types of cheeses like Parmesan. Find the veggies in a store or at a lovely Farmer’s Market (especially as we get closer to Spring and more things are growing), search for a new recipe, and get cooking! You might find something you still hate or you may find something you actually love so get out there and give them a try, you won’t regret it!

Week 3 is all about trying new Fruits. Now, fruits may be a little bit on the trickier side if you are currently in a place where it is all about the snow and cold right now. You will probably have some difficulty finding the right kinds of fruit that you may already love like Strawberries and Blueberries, but you could always try out some frozen varieties and see how you like them-maybe in a nice smoothie? Don’t forget to try out some new fruits like Dragon fruit or Star fruit or maybe even some fresh figs when you can find them. We recently made a yummy fruit salad with fresh lime zest and mint and it was delicious! Try out different types of fresh herbs with some sugar and see how you like them-you just may surprise yourself. You can also research into when fruits and veggies are at their freshest in your area and start buying them then as well. Seasonal veggies and fruits are the very best so be sure to look into them throughout the year! Hope you enjoy this flavor journey!
